Hello,

I have qualified tube-tubesheet joint with tubesheet made of SA516Gr.60 ( P1, Gr.1 ) and tubes SA106 Gr.B ( P1, Gr.1 ).
May I use this PQR for joint of SA516Gr.70 ( P1, Gr. 2 ) to SA334 Gr. 6 ( P1, Gr. 1 )?

Thank you.

Hivris

Hivris,

a PQR P1.1 to P1.2 base metals qualifies:

-if impact tests are not required: all P1 materials regardless of the Gr. Nos.
-if impact tests are required: P1.1 to P1.1, P1.2 to P1.2 and P1.1 to P1.1 (see Qw-403.5(c))

Juergen,

we have existing PQR made on plate 1-1 and tube 1-1. For new heat exchanger we have to use tube plate SA516 Gr.70 ( 1-2 ) and tubes SA334 Gr. 6 ( 1-1 ). For standard groove joints I would have to make new PQR. Is that applicable also for this specific tube to tubesheet joint? or there is any exemption that I don`t know?

Thanks,

Hivris

Hivris,

Acc to. QW-202.6 there are 3 options for the qualification of a tube to tubesheet joint

Code:
QW-202.6 Tube-to-Tubesheet Qualification. When the applicable Code Section requires the use of QW-193 for tube-to-tubesheet demonstration mockup qualification tests, QW-193.1 shall apply. If specific qualification test requirements are not specified by the applicable Code Section, tube-to-tubesheet welds shall be qualified with one of the following methods:
(a) groove welds per the requirements of QW-202.2 and QW-202.4
(b) a demonstration mockup per the requirements of QW-193.1
(c) fillet welds per the requirements of QW-202.2(c) (for nonpressure retaining tube-to-tubesheet welds only)

I assume your joint is a pressure retaining joint and therefore (a) and (b) above are applicable only.

For qualification acc. to QW-202.6(a):
If impact tests are required by the design code for this joint a new PQR P1-1 to P1-2 is required.
But in consequence of the low thickness of the bundle tubes in most of all cases tube to tubesheet joints are exempted from impact testing.

For qualification acc. to QW-202.6(b):
A new PQR is not required acc. to QW-288.1(i), because the P-No. only is a variable.
