Dear All,

Is it possible to perfom full UT Examination (Phased Array) instead of RT Examination for vessels in Lethal Service and for Hydrogen Service?

Thank you in advance bye

Rinosa,

Section VIII Division 1 does not permit UT in lieu of RT, except for the final closure seam when RT is technically impracticable.

But there is the famous Code Case 2235-x. If so specified by the owner, and all conditions of the COde case are fulfilled, UT may be used.
Please consider all conditions and do not forget to demonstrate the procedure to your AI prior to using it.

Dirk,
I still struggle to imagine how people manage to convince their AI's that CC2235 can be applied to requirements of UW-2, when it specifically defines the range of overruled requirements, and there's only UW-11(a) listed from SecVIII-1.

Konrad,

UW-11 (a)(1) says: all butt welds in the shell and heads of vessels used to contain lethal substances [see UW-2(a)];

So this is part of UW-11(a), which is referenced in the CC-2235. I see no problem to accept for an AI.
More problematic are the other conditions in the Code Case, like recording of the data, etc.

Dirk, I know that this is the intent. But the wording is written black on white. Imagine a request for interpretation:
Q: Does Code Case 2235 exempt from requirements of UW-2?

What would be the answer, when an interpretation cannot widen the meaning of any rules? From literary reading the "Inquiry" part of the CC, the only answer would be a "No", wouldn't it?
