Dear All,

I do not find any Code § permitting the use of UT (TOFD or/and PA) as alternative to RT exempt the condition of impracticable RT. :!:

Please advice if I'm right.

Thanks

Please refer code case 2235 for UT in lieu of radiography

Regards

Right, Code Case applies to full RT only. No chance to satisfy spot RT requirements. However, be practical, Spot RT is used for low thickness only (when a 15% more thickness is not a problem), in which case there is no great advantage to perform UT instead of RT.

When RT is IMPRACTICABLE, i.e. technically impossible, UW-11(a)
(7) ultrasonic examination in accordance with
UW-53 may be substituted for radiography for the final
closure seam of a pressure vessel if the construction of
the vessel does not permit interpretable radiographs in
accordance with Code requirements. The absence of suitable
radiographic equipment shall not be justification for
such substitution.

The alternative would be Code case 2235, but the computer based storage of raw data including the position of the scanning head is the big question.

TAKE CARE
DK

Thanks for all.

TOFD and PA equiped with semi-automatic scanning system assure the position traceability of any found defect. And since the examination is full, in my opinion, only the position of the defect may be a question.

In fact, the scanning system includes a distance measuring devise adding to the scanning data of all the weld. At the end we will obtain a full scanning graphic with dimensions.

Your two paragraphs are not understood: do they contain any question?
First paragraph: Position is not a question, once you establish and record the starting point and direction of advancement.
Second paragraph: Yes a full scanning grphic with position characteristics and dimensions of indications is recorded. Mauro

No Mr. Gonzaga it is not a question. It's a reply to the remark of Dr Koelbl when he said the following "......, but the computer based storage of raw data including the position of the scanning head is the big question"

In order to check if what I described for semi-automatic scanning system can be acceptable.

Thank you
