ASME NE-5262 Nonbutt-Welded Joints
If other than a butt welded joint detail is used on
pressure retaining parts, it shall be examined by an ultrasonic
method, a magnetic particle method, or a liquid
penetrant method, all in accordance with NE-5110

My question is:Does that means that we have to perform UT to non-butt weld,or just choose one from three requirements, out designer considers UT necessary and mandatory to check the defect inside the weld.
I am wondering if that is necessary to perform UT to fillet weld?

Dephy,

The non butt welded joints as defined by NE-5242 are those full penetration corner welded nozzles. Nozzles attached by full penetration welds through the wall of the vessel and shall be capable of being examined as required by NE-5242. See Fig. NE-4244(b)-1.

thanks,Leem

I have some additional remarks,Here is the details:first is,what i means is the joint between vessel and external stiffener which should be the attachment with pressure retaining function,so i think the NDE requirement should conform to NE-5260 other than NE-5240.Maybe full penetration Corner welds you mentioned is just an example.does the "non-butt weld" means the full pentration welds? can you give me some hint?

Dephy,

Hint: Joint detail shown in FIg. NE-4243-1 (d) is considered to be nonbutt weld and the examination requirement of NE-5232 are applicable.
