Welded joins connecting flanges to nozzles are placed under category C weld joints.
Code:
UW 3(c):Category C- Welded joints connecting flanges, Van Stone laps, tubesheets, or flat heads to main shell, to formed heads, to transitions in diameter, to nozzles, or to communicating chambers any welded joint connecting one side plate to another side plate of a flat-side vessel.
some of the questions coming to mind are;
1. Can we consider full penetration butt weld joint between WN flange and nozzle pipe under cat B weld which covers circumferential welds within nozzles? Practically for a full penetration butt weld, keeping it either in cat B or C category will however not make any difference
2. As per the code definition of cat C weld joint " Welded joints connecting flanges to nozzles", are not flanges welded to nozzle pipes considered as a part of nozzle?
Request your interpretation/ advise on the above.
