Dear all,

My contractor has proposed preliminary WPS to be qualified for welding super duplex heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is designed based on ASME VIII Div 1 and TEMA. The proposed welding consumables stated in WPS and welding consumable data sheet do not have specification i.e no SFA No, AWS No, F-No and A-No. E.g. Supercore Z100XP produced by Metrode for FCAW. Can I use that welding consumables to qualify the WPS based on ASME IX and that WPS/PQR can be used for ASME U-stamp heat exchanger? Please advice. TQ.

Hi,

the key is the design code, because ASME IX is a reference code.
Code:
“UG-4 GENERAL
(a) Material subject to stress due to pressure shall conform to one of the specifications given in Section II, Part D, Subpart 1, Tables 1A, 1B, and 3, including all applicable notes in the tables, and shall be limited to those that are permitted in the applicable Part of Subsection C, except as otherwise permitted in UG-9, UG-10, UG-11, UG-15, Part UCS, and the Mandatory Appendices.  ...”

UG-4 gives the reference to UG-9 for filler metal :
Code:
"UG-9 WELDING MATERIALS
Welding materials used for production shall comply with the requirements of this Division, those of Section IX, and the applicable qualified welding procedure specification.
When the welding materials comply with one of the specifications in Section II, Part C, the marking or tagging of the material, containers, or packages as required by the applicable Section II specification may be accepted for identification in lieu of a Certified Test Report or a Certificate of Compliance.
When the welding materials do not comply with one of the specifications of Section II, the marking or tagging shall be identifiable with the welding materials set forth in the welding procedure specification, and may be accepted in lieu of a Certified Test Report or a Certificate of Compliance."

That means you have two options:
(1) welding materials acc. to ASME IIC
(2) welding materials not in compliance with ASME IIC.

As stated in UG-9 both options are in compliance with the code provided that the procedure qualification meets the requirements of ASME IX.

But if the filler metal is not assigned to an A- and/or F-No. the PQR and WPQ is valid only for the brand name of the used filler metal.

Thank you very much Mr Juergen on your detail explanation. I will use the filler metal which are not in compliance with ASME IIC (i.e. filler metal is not assigned to SFA No, AWS No, F-No and A-No.)

Are the welders need to be requalified by using the above filler metal as the F-No is essential variable for welder qualification? Thanks.

mnor05,

There is only one exception for F-Nos. of filler metals not in compliance with ASME IIC, QW-433, note (1):
Code:
Deposited weld metal made using a bare rod not covered by an SFA Specification but which conforms to an analysis listed in QW-442 shall be considered to be classified as F-No. 6.

But in your case the filler metal is a flux-cored wire and the above exception is not applicable.
This means you have to qualify the welder with the brand name of filler metal used for the actual item. Please see also QW-355 with reference to QW-404.15.
