Lang,

CONFINED WELD, what do you mean: a weld inside the vessel which does not retain pressure?

Every weld welded directly to the pressure retaining surface is subject to Code requirements, and shall be made with a procedure qualified according to Section IX, by a welder qualified to Section IX. This is addressed by the Construction Code, e.g. U-1.

Lang,

ASME IX is a reference code only.
That means the requirements for WPQ and/or PQR are in the design code.
E.g. ASME VIII/1 see UW-28 for PQR and UW-29 for WPQ and WOPQ .

Sec VIII Div 1 states that you must identify each welder's weld. How you do this is up to you and your AI.

Instead of hard stamping the welder's ID in each weld, I generate a weld map to identify each weld which is part of the Traveler. Other info that is recorded is WPS used, fit-up date inspection, final weld inspection date, with place for AI and/or Client's Representative to sign & date. This is accompanied with a drawing of the vessel with numerical identification of each weld.
