INSERT PLATE?

I am locating one 24” NB nozzle on shell (3100 mm ID & 18 mm thk) with a reinforcing pad of diameter 1112 mm & 18 mm thk plate. When I analyzed this geometry in PVElite software it seems to be ok as per code.

But now, when I am doing WRC 297 calculation for the same geometry, stresses are exceeding than allowable with a big difference in allowable & actual stresses. I can’t increase my R.F. pad dimensions as it is near to tan line of vessel.

So now, if I have to locate the insert plate, how could be its construction? How to define the diameter of insert plate? Will R.F. pad remains there with insert plate?

As I did the rough calculation of WRC 297 with insert plate geometry & R.F. pad is also there, the stresses are coming just below than allowable stresses.

So, please can anyone explain me what is the insert plate exactly with a sample sketch? As still today I have not seen the insert plate construction.

I will highly appreciate your answers.

Insert plate is a thicker plate (as compare to shell/ head thickness) equal to the thickness of shell/ head plate + the Thickness of reinforcement required on the opening.

Dear Sanjeev Sir,

Thanks for u r valuable reply.

But still i m worry about the reinforcing pad. Shall i use R.F. pad with insert plate?
Or, do i need to use the only one insert plate whose thickness will be equal to sum of the R.F. pad thickness & shell thickness?
Because while designing this geometry in PVElite, i have considered 28 mm thk insert plate & 18 mm thk R.F. pad. This geometry is safe in WRC 297 calculation.

Please suggest me the best construction...........

I m waiting for u r positive helping hands.

Using a reinforcing pad on an insert plate is a nonsense, apart from any technical consideration. However if technical consideration of fatigue or stress concentration mandate the insert plate you have to place an insert plate of such a thickness to give all the compensation required.
