In one of our vessel (25mm thk) there is a cleat (15mm thk) for Top Davit is to be welded with a Blind Flange (102mm thk). Type of joint is Butt weld+ cover fillet. Is it required to have a WPS qualified for a range upto 102mm? But above 38mm requires PWHT in ASME Sec VIII. can we qualify for this range without PWHT? We have restricted one of our WPS range less than 38mm(PQR thk is 45mm &actually qualifies upto 200mm) Any suggestions?

refer Note 2 (c) (3) provided under Table UCS 56 for P1 material (assuming u r asking for P1)

if your resultant weld is a groove weld, yes qualification for 102mm base metal thickness to be concidered

Please read definition of thickness in UW-40(f): It is not the thickness of the part where it is welded.

MR Raghurambathula,

Code:
UW-40 PROCEDURES FOR POSTWELD HEAT TREATMENT
(f)(5) When a welded joint connects parts of unequal thicknesses, the nominal thickness shall be the following:
   (f) the thickness of the weld at the point of attachment when a nonpressure part is welded to a pressure part;

hence I thing If the weld thk is less than 38mm PWHT/ WPS qualified with PWHT is not required? Am I correct

Section IX is reference book and you need to follow requirement of UCS 56. Hence in my opinion you need WPS which has PWHT requirement. WPS must meet the requirement of Construction Code not Section IX which only guides to prepare WPS.

Yes Mr. Gonzaga, provided for 32 to 38mm preheat 95 °C is maintained.
