Dear sir
we have the Rail welding here material is astm a36 material but we recive the material is IS0 2062 material it is almost euivalent to ASTM a36 chemical composition. The total rail thickness is 95 mm As per manifacturer recomdation is upto 85 mm thickness to weld with E7018 & last 10mm to weld with E 9018 electrode this is mention in drawing.......so i search the wps for that one in our orginasation we have alredy qualified wps is avilable for the pipe is same thickness for E7018 & E 9018 also.. The wps number is 28ps & 4ps some essential are avilable i listed below if any thing comments please reply me

This is the two wps

WPS P. G. MAT B.M THI SPE FILLE F.NO A.NO FOR RAIL WELDING THICKNESS

4PS 5A 1 A335P22 5-51.2 AWS A5.5 E9018-B3 4 4 UPPER 10MM E9018

28PS 1 1 A106GRB,A36 19-50 AWS A5.1 E7018 4 1 LOWWER PART 85 MM E7018

SO I INFORM TO SUBCONTRACTOR BY USING COMBINATION OF PROCESS WE WILL MAKE A NEW WPS AS PER
ASME SEC IX ARTICLE II
PARAGRAPH NO 'C SAYS Changes to the WPS. Changes may be made in the nonessential variables of a WPS to suit production requirements without requalification provided such changes are documented with respect to the essential, nonessential, and, when required, supplementary essentialvariables for each process. This may be by amendmentto the WPS or by use of a new WPS.

My question is sir aws specification is different see above & A number is different so we can use qualify this wps to start the welding
please soon as possible reply me sir forward your suggesion

The below reference are matches this point As per ASME sec IX PLEAS check & forward comments
P.NO IS QUALIFIED
G NO IS QUALIFIED
F.NO IS QUALIFIED
BASE METAL THICKNESSQUALIFIED
A.NO IS DIFFERENT BUT WE ARE USING AS A COMBINATION OF PROCESS WE CAN QUALIFY BECAUSE THIS
DESIGNER REQUIREMENT OF RAIL WELDING WE FULLFILL THEIR REQUIREMENT DUE TO LAST 10 MM SHOULD BE HIGH STRENGTH

No1, QW-200.4 Combination of Welding Procedures

(a) More than one WPS having different essential, supplementary essential, or nonessential variables may be used in a single production joint. Each WPS may include one or a combination of processes, filler metals ,or other variables.
Where more than one WPS specifying different processes, filler metals, or other essential or supplementary
Essential variables is used in a joint, QW-451 shall be used to determine the range of base metal thickness and
Maximum weld metal thickness qualified for each process, filler metal, or set of variables, and those limits
shall be observed. Alternatively, qualification of WPSs for root deposits only may be made in accordance with
QW-200.4(b).
When following a WPS that has more than one welding
process, filler metal, or set of variables, each process,
filler metal, or set of variables may be used individually
or in different combinations, provided

MY SUGESSION :So combination process is qualified for two wps for single production joint

No2. QW-310 QUALIFICATION TEST COUPONS
QW-310.1 Test Coupons. The test coupons may be
plate, pipe, or other product forms. When all position qualifications for pipe are accomplished by welding one
pipe assembly in both the 2G and 5G positions (figureQW-461.4), NPS 6 (DN 150), NPS 8 (DN 200), NPS 10
(DN 250), or larger diameter pipe shall be employed to make up the test coupon as shown in figure QW-463.2(f)
for NPS 10 (DN 250) or larger pipe and in figure

MY SUGESSION ;Because our wps is qualified for pipe only we can use same wps fpr plate also it is also qualified

QW-403 Base Metals
QW-403.1 A change from a base metal listed under one P-Number in table QW/QB-422 to a metal listed
under another P-Number or to any other base metal. When joints are made between two base metals that have differentP-Numbers, a procedure qualification shall be made for the applicable combination of P-Numbers, even
though qualification tests have been made for each of the two base metals welded to itself

QW-424 Base Metals Used for Procedure Qualification

QW-424.1 Base metals are assigned P- or S-Number in table QW/QB-422; metals that do not appear in table
QW/QB-422 are considered to be unassigned metals except as otherwise defined in QW-420.1 for base metals
having the same UNS numbers. Unassigned metals shall be identified in the WPS and on the PQR by specification,
type and grade, or by chemical analysis and mechanical properties. The minimum tensile strength shall be defined
by the organization that specified the unassigned metal if the tensile strength of that metal is not defined by the
material specification.

QW-424 Base Metals Used for Procedure
MY SUGESSION ;Fifth paragraph matches our wps So base metal also qualified because our one wps is p.no 1& another wps p.no 5

QW-451 Procedure Qualification Thickness Limits and Test Specimens
Same thickness also because our both wps is qualified min 15mm to max55 mm it also qualified

QW-420.2 S or p Numbers.

S-Numbers are assigned to materials that are acceptable for use by the ASME B31
Code for Pressure Piping, or by selected Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Cases, but which are not included within
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Material Specifications(Section II).Material produced under an ASTM specification shall be considered to have the same S-Number or S-Number plus Group Number as that of the P-Number or P-Number plus Group Number assigned to the same grade or type material in the corresponding ASME specification (i.e.,SA-240 Type 304 is assigned P-No. 8, Group No. 1;therefore, A 240 Type 304 is considered S-No. 8, Group

MY SUGESSION : So P or S number also qualified because our one wps is Sno 1 & another S.no 1

QW-430 F-NUMBERS

Same F number for both wps it also qualified (F4)

QW-404.5 A number
(Applicable only to ferrous metals.) Achange in the chemical composition of the weld deposit
from one A-Number to any other A-Number in tableQW-442. Qualification with A-No. 1 shall qualify for
A-No. 2 and vice versa.

(a) For all welding processes — from the chemical
analysis of the weld deposit taken from the procedure
qualification test coupon.
(b) For SMAW, GTAW, and PAW—from the chemical
analysis of the weld deposit prepared according to
the filler metal specification, or from the chemical composition
as reported either in the filler metal specification or
the manufacturer’s or supplier’s certificate of compliance.

Our problem is here two wps having different A number but as per QW-404.5 IT IS ESSENTIAL VARIABLE but the QW-404.5 PARAGRAPH (B) SAYING THIS IS CONSUMABLE MANIFACTURER CERTIFICATE so it is also qualified & QW-200.4 says we can qualify due to combination of process so it is qualified

So P.NO IS QUALIFIED
G NO IS QUALIFIED
F.NO IS QUALIFIED
BASE METAL THICKNESSQUALIFIED
A.NO IS DIFFERENT BUT WE ARE USING AS A COMBINATION OF PROCESS WE CAN QUALIFY BECAUSE THIS
DESIGNER REQUIREMENT OF RAIL WELDING WE FULLFILL THEIR REQUIREMENT DUE TO LAST 10 MM SHOULD BE HIGH STRENGTH

You can't use the combination specified
what is your code of construction?, assuming you ned to follow ASME Sec IX, you need to qualify new procedure on IS 2062 material (since it is an unassigned material in ASME) using combination of E7018+E9018

E9018-B3 is 2,25 Cr material, you can select E9018M instead to meet th strength requirement
is there PWHT involved?

Hallo sir

Thank you very much for your reply

NO pwht requirement ....

Actually we are using B 31.3 but this rail welding is to storage the material (for example same like rail way track) after production this rail wil store the material from one place to anothe.r so that why i think we follow AWS D 15.2 that is for rail welding & so we need to qualify seperate pqr & wps .....

your suggestion please sir

Thank you
